Don't Blame Me.

I have been meaning to tell you this for a long time. I am sick and tired of you blaming me. I haven't done anything but be here for you, as I was for your father, his father before him and for many generations past. Still you leave me at the slightest opportunity, making excuses for your ineptitude and blaming me, just as your father did. But we both know I am not the problem.
I give you everything, as I did your father before you. I gave him my fertility, my beauty and my wealth as I have given you today but all he did was abuse and scorn me, drenched me in the blood and tears of my children whom you've forced me to bury before their time. You fight one another as though I am not enough for you all, as though I haven't always been. Then you turn around and run away as though another isn't immediately born in your place who thanks to your hateful cowardice grows up to resent me too. I'm not the one with a problem. I am not the one who steals from me and then locks my wealth away in a vault of greed. I am not the one who arms your children and pits them against one another. I am here as I always have and always will be, waiting for you to grow up and wise, but when you do, you lose the courage to fight for me as I have patiently waited for you. You will leave me in the hands of evil men and women, those who only want to exploit me and then turn your back on me and call me hopeless. Yet here I am, hoping on you to find your voice.
Before you run off and let me down like your father did, I need you to know that with every drop of your blood you spill, I die a little inside. With every drop of your tears that touch me, I cry to the heavens too and when you return I will be here waiting for you.

Sabali!!

The most rampant phenomenon in this fast paced world we live in today, is the absolute lack of patience in most people. It is in everything, some of us are too impatient for traffic so we drive way too fast, we are too impatient to eat healthy so we prefer instant noodles, we are heading to the future so damn fast, we don't care what composites our present. I am a typical example of this madness but lately, I have been learning about patience. It is a wonderful feeling to not be in a hurry, the problem is that we have somehow managed to convince ourselves that the only way to be successful or happy is by doing it first! It is a scam. Life teaches us, along with time that a true sense of fulfilment does not depend on the when but the what and the how well. As a victim of the Nigerian tertiary education system, I know firsthand what it feels like to not be in control of one's own progress at a certain time in life. I spent the greater part of the last two years at home because of...

Democracy 1-0 Intellectualism

Reacting to the result of the most recent referendum in Britain where they have voted to leave the European Union, I'd like to point out a positive lesson that is being ignored in the wake of the development. I am talking about the sheer honesty of democracy, albeit working against apparently superior reasoning. It is yet another example of how democracy takes power from the so called superior minority and places it in the palms of the vast and mostly ignorant majority, to do with it as they will. The people have spoken and history has been made. Whether it will be for better or worse is only a question of time. This brings me to the issue that is weighing on my mind today. The right to Self determination is one of the core liberties of the individual as well as the society at large. If a person or people have that right taken away from them either blatantly or via proxy, such a person or people are automatically robbed of the imagination and courage required to develop themselves...

Postponement of Hate

Let me start by saying that I am at a point in my life as a citizen, actor and critic of the Nigerian Case where I cannot help but feel pity for some of us who have allowed themselves to be the voice of disunity, irrationality, violence, fanaticism, hate and downright stupidity. At a time when Nigeria needs as many reasonable men as she can manage, a  lot of us have failed her. Today started off with a protest following a rumor which of course turned out to be true. While I cannot stick my neck out in defense of anybody, I have to say that the sheer lack of reasoning that greeted the announcement of the postponement of elections, is a clear indication of all that is wrong with the country today. It is that stubborn refusal to entertain any view contrary to the ones we hold. But It is impossible for any group of people to move forward or even stick together if they absolutely refuse to UNDERSTAND one another. The reactions from some people in both camps makes one who is not convers...
